A hygiene visit does more than polish your teeth. What happens at an appointment, how often you may need one and how our Mill Hill team helps your gums.

Many people think of a hygiene appointment as a quick scale and polish. In reality it is one of the most useful preventive visits you can make, because it focuses on the gums and the bone that hold your teeth in place.

What happens at a hygiene appointment

  • Gum check: the hygienist measures the small spaces between your gums and teeth, often using a screening called the Basic Periodontal Examination (BPE), to spot early signs of gum disease.
  • Removing tartar: hardened plaque, or calculus, can't be brushed away. It is removed with hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers, including from just under the gum line.
  • Stain removal and polish: surface staining from tea, coffee, red wine or smoking can be lifted, leaving teeth feeling smooth.
  • Personal advice: you will be shown which interdental brush sizes fit your teeth, how to clean around crowns, bridges or implants, and how to adapt your routine.

Why gum health matters

Gum disease is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. In its early stage, gingivitis, gums may bleed when you brush, but it can be reversed. Left alone, it can progress to periodontitis, where the support around teeth is gradually lost. Because it often causes no pain early on, regular checks are the most reliable way to catch it.

How often should I go?

There isn't a single answer. In the UK, NICE guidance recommends that the interval between dental check-ups is based on each person's risk, ranging from three months to two years. Hygiene visits work in a similar way: someone with a history of gum disease may need appointments every three months, while others need them less often. We will suggest an interval based on what we see.

Can I book a hygienist directly?

Yes. Since 2013, patients in the UK have been able to see a dental hygienist without first seeing a dentist in many situations. If the hygienist finds something that needs a dentist, such as decay, they will let you know.
