If your stomach drops when you hear the drill, you’re far from alone. Roughly one in four adults feels nervous about dental visits, and for some people the fear is bad enough that they put off appointments for years. The good news is that a few simple changes can make a big difference. Here’s how to take the dread out of the dentist, from the team at Dental Wellness Mill Hill.

Ask a room of adults who enjoys going to the dentist and you’ll get a lot of laughs and very few hands. For some people it’s mild unease. For others it’s a racing heart, a sleepless night before, and a booking that gets cancelled three times.

Whatever your version looks like, there’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Dental teams hear it every day, and we’d much rather you tell us than quietly stay away.

Why Dental Fear Is So Common

Most dental anxiety comes from one of a few places: a bad experience in childhood, fear of pain, dislike of the sounds and smells, or simply not knowing what’s about to happen. For many people it’s also about control. Lying back with someone working in your mouth, unable to speak, is an uncomfortable position to be in.

Understanding where your fear comes from is the first step, because each source has its own fix.

1. Tell Us When You Book

The single most helpful thing you can do is say so. When you book, mention that you feel anxious. We can schedule a longer slot so nothing feels rushed, choose a quieter time of day, and plan the visit around what you’re comfortable with.

You don’t need to explain yourself or justify it. A simple “I get nervous at the dentist” is enough.

2. Ask for a “Meet and Talk” First

You don’t have to have treatment at your first visit. Many nervous patients start with a conversation, a look around the practice, and a gentle check-up with no pressure to do anything else. Once you know the people and the room, the next appointment feels much less daunting.

3. Agree a Stop Signal

Feeling out of control is a big part of dental fear, so we give some of it back. Agree a simple hand signal, such as raising your left hand, that means “pause.” Knowing you can stop things at any moment makes a surprising difference, and most patients find they rarely need to use it.

4. Ask Us to Explain Each Step

For some people, knowing exactly what’s happening helps. For others, not knowing is easier. Both are fine. Tell us which you prefer, and we’ll talk you through each step or leave you to switch off, whichever works for you.

5. Try Simple Calming Techniques

A few things you can do yourself before and during your visit:

  • Breathe in slowly for four counts and out for six, which helps settle your nervous system
  • Bring headphones and listen to music, a podcast, or an audiobook
  • Avoid too much caffeine beforehand, since it can make you feel jittery
  • Eat beforehand so you’re not light-headed
  • Arrive a few minutes early so you’re not rushing

6. Ask About Comfort Options

Modern dentistry is far more comfortable than many people remember. Numbing is effective, and techniques have improved a lot. If you’re worried about pain, tell us, and we’ll talk you through what’s available for your treatment.

7. Don’t Put It Off

It’s tempting to avoid the dentist until something hurts. Unfortunately, that usually means the problem has grown, and treatment becomes bigger and more stressful than it needed to be. Regular, short check-ups are the best way to keep visits simple and the fear manageable. It’s a bit like building up gradually: the more routine appointments feel, the less scary they become.

You’re in Good Hands

If you’ve avoided the dentist for a long time, you won’t be judged. We’re not here to lecture you about the past. We just want to help you feel comfortable and look after your teeth from here.
